College Stadium And Arena Playing Surfaces Renovation

Improvements to the Playing Field

In the 1960s and 1970s, modern versions of the kiva—the circular, sunken stone structure with tiered bench seating that Puebloan American Indians built for spiritual and social gatherings—began appearing in open-plan schools. Kids loved the kiva, analogous to stadium seating, because it was climbable and inherently social. Educators loved how it functioned as a school’s town square, accommodating everything from planned events to playtime. Now, progressive companies—whose goal, much like that of schools, is to facilitate productivity while maintaining, ideally, at least a facade of enjoyment—have come to embrace it for many of the same reasons.

In the past five years, 64.29% of colleges in the sample, including 66,670/0 of public colleges and 57,140/0 private colleges, have renovated the playing field turf in their sports stadium, Whereas 91.67% or colleges with a stadium seating capacity of 10,000 to 30,000 and 85.71% of those with a seating capacity of more than 30.000 have renovated the playing field turf, just 35.71% of colleges with a stadium seating capaclty of less than 2,500 have done the same. 50% of colleges with -stadiums that are less than 20 years old have renovated the playing field turf in the past five years, compared with 60% or colleges with stadiums between 20 and 60 years old and 83.33% of colleges with stadiums that were built more than 60 years ago.

Stadium scoreboards have been renovated by college in the sample in the past five years. including 62.5% of colleges with a stadium seating capacity of 2.500 to 10,000 and 71,43% of colleges with a seating capacity or more than 30,000, Field lighting has been renovated by 22% or colleges with stadiums built less than 20 years ago, 35% or colleges with stadiums built 20 to 60 years ago and 38.89% of colleges With stadiums built more than 60 years ago. Altogether, 32.14% colleges in the sample have renovated field lighting in their sports stadium in the past five years.

26.79% of colleges in the sample have improved their stadium landscaping in the past five years, including 35.29% of colleges with more than 20,000 students and 30% or colleges with less than 5,000 students. 33.33% of colleges with a stadium built more than 60 years ago have improved thc landscaping in the past five years, whereas just 15% of those with stadiums between 20 and 60 years old have done so.

The Cost of Renovations

Improvements to the stadium field turf have cost colleges in the sample a mean of $1,657,840 and a maximum of $15,000,000 over the past five years. Colleges with more than 20,000 students enrolled have spent over $3 million on turf improvements, whereas colleges with 5,000 to 20,000 students have spent about $1,7 million and those with fewer than 5,000 students have spent. a mean of $8,000, Scoreboard renovations have cost colleges in the sample a mean of over this time period, $2, 780,294 for public colleges and $12,333 for private ones. Colleges With a stadium bullt more than 60 years ago have spent a mean $4, 725,000 on scoreboard renovations, while those with a stadium built in the past 20 years have spent a mean of $13,800.

In fact, many universities in places like Tennessee, Kansas, Arizona and elsewhere are shelling out astronomical funds to build shiny new stadiums, or to make their existing facilities bigger and better.A lot, if not most, of the money for these multimillion-dollar facilities comes from private donors, but the ultra-high numbers speak volumes about the role of sports in America's education system. Sporting events, particularly football, have become cash cows that are critical to the overall economic success of many institutes of higher learning. Even after adjusting for inflation, experts say the cost of modernizing or replacing aging stadiums is generally pricier than a generation ago.
